More good news for Louisiana teachers.

First the gun bill, then the bill taking away accrued sick leave and now this! What educator wouldn't see Louisiana as a dream state?

2theadvocate.com | : Author denies bill lets creationism slip into schools
The chairman of the Senate education committee is sponsoring a bill to revamp the way science is taught in public schools, including views that challenge biological evolution.

Sen. Ben Nevers, D-Bogalusa and sponsor of the bill, said Monday that it would be unfair to label his bill as one that would pave the way for the teaching of creationism — the view that life began about 6,000 years ago in a process described in the Bible’s Book of Genesis.

“I believe that students should be exposed to both sides of scientific data and allow them to make their own decisions,” Nevers said Monday.

Hey thanks for the great blog, I love this stuff. I don’t usually read much into politics but with the election coming up (not to mention the dem primaries) and everyone going green these days I thought I would leave a comment.

I am trying to find more about the government and if they are going to ratify the Kyoto Protocol any time soon. Has anyone seen this pole on EarthLab.com http://www.earthlab.com/life.aspx ? It said 75% of people think the government should ratify the Kyoto Protocol on Earth Day (when I took it). I also saw something on Wikipedia but it wasn’t up to date. Any other thoughts on where the government is going with this?

I am looking for more info on what candidates’ opinions are and how are we are going to get closer to solutions. Drop a link if you see anything worth my time.

Oh good grief! Both sides of the scientific data?? I know this is not news to you, JoefromNola, or anyone who reads (or can read) your site--but there are not TWO sides to the data...Amazing.

Anonymous--I don't know if it helps, but a few months ago I dropped in on a class in political controversies, where the topic of discussion was Bush's statement that we won't sign Kyoto because China won't sign. Don't know if this helps.

P.S.--Gulp. Accrued *sick leave* has now been taken away?? This is looking more and more like a fight to the death of Jindal vs. Louisiana educators, and I'm horrified to say that Jindal will win. I really want to be wrong.

This makes no sense to me. Even in Catholic school there is a clear deliniation between science and creationism. Creationism is kept within the confines of religion class and evolution within science. Now the public schools are going to blur the line. Not what I would expect.

It isn't Jindal that La. educators are fighting.

Jindal is a Republican plant who has been groomed since very early on to be "their man in La."

The only way to convince voters in this state to vote for a Rethuglican (not my coinage) is to put a wolf in sheep's clothing alongside (who had been unfairly framed as) an incompetent woman who received no help from a federal gov't that sat on its hands so that she could take the fall for this administration's epic neglect.

It worked and now he's going to further the Republican agenda to eviscerate this state's last bastions of free thought.

This phenomenon is bigger than one man's state administration.
