Fifty years of damage in one day.

The amount of wetlands thought to have been lost to the hurricanes in southeast Louisiana was greater than the total loss projected there over the next 50 years, said Jimmy Johnston, chief of the Wetlands Center's Spatial Analysis Branch.

"We have to change the way we're doing business," he said, commenting on the need for extensive coastal restoration work. "I've never seen anything like this."
