ORANGE, TX, United States (UPI) -- Grammy-winning bluesman Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown has died in Orange, Texas, where he went to seek shelter from Hurricane Katrina.
Brown, 81, had been suffering from lung cancer, emphysema and heart disease, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported.
He fled from his home along the bayou to his brother`s home in Orange, where he died Saturday. His New Orleans property was destroyed.
Brown`s mixture of blues, boogie, Cajun, swing and country brought him a Grammy, numerous Handy Awards and scores of other accolades, the Times-Picayune said. Eric Clapton -- among Brown`s most outspoken fans -- enlisted the bluesman in the 1990s as the opening act for arena tours in Europe and the United States.
