The Buffalo Cove project will focus on a 58,000-acre section of the Basin and serve as a test case to help develop further restoration programs in the swamp.
"This is just the beginning," said Mark Wingate, a project manager with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The $3.2 million project is an outgrowth of a Basin restoration plan developed in the 1970s. The effort languished until regaining momentum -- and securing funding -- over the past five years.
